Butterfly Bush

Early this morning I was out watering trees and shrubs, because like so many other areas of the country, we are in the midst of a drought.

I was also cutting back the dead flowers that had bloomed on the Butterfly Bushes.

Do you know you are supposed to cut the dead flowers off after they have finished blooming?  That’s so they will produce more flowers.  I have so many beautiful butterflies being drawn to the bushes, I hope to keep the bushes blooming as long as possible.

Did you know you are supposed to cut the bushes down almost to the ground when it’s cold?  That's so they can regenerate stronger and more robust than before.

While I was cutting the old blooms off, I thought of the scripture about being pruned and how many many times God has pruned me of behaviors that were no longer necessary.

Like the Butterfly Bush I continue to need pruning, pruning I will no doubt always need for the rest of my life.

The difference though is that even when I don’t want to give those personal things up; I now know it is necessary, for the purpose they were first intended is no longer necessary. Therefore I try to no longer resist.

He will continue to prune me as long and as many times as I need it, because I am not much use to Him doing things my way.

While every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful.
